Keep your furbabies safe this valentine's day
- FLOWERS - they are one of the most popular gifts to give on Valentine’s Day but not many people think about the dangers some flowers hold for your pets. If you have a pet that likes to nibble on flowers and plants, you should avoid greenery such as lilies, tulips, azaleas, cyclamen, chrysanthemum, amaryllis and more. The result of ingestion could be vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of coordination, and multi-organ damage, and other irritations. Being careful around rose thorns is also important. Even if a thorn gets stepped on it can cause an infection.
- CANDY & CHOCOLATE - Candy is another concern. Most people know to keep dogs away from chocolate as the caffeine like stimulants can cause anything from vomiting to seizures. The fat content in some milk chocolates can also damage the pancreas beyond repair. Xylitol, a sugar alcohol, is also dangerous for your pets. It is often found in chewing gums and lots of breath mints. If ingested by an animal it can cause an unsafe drop in blood sugar, which can lead to hypoglycemia and other complications.
- WRAPPINGS & DECORATIONS - Tapes, ribbons, balloons and wrapping paper must be kept away from nosy pets as well. Things like this are fun to chew on but can cause blockages if eaten.
